  17. This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of a new
  18. worldwide unmoderated Usenet newsgroup comp.object.corba. This is not a
  19. Call for Votes - do not vote now. To participate in the discussion,
  20. follow the topic on news.groups. Please do not discuss the group creation
  21. in other groups - it will most probably be off topic there.

  31. OMG CORBA (Object Management Group, Common Object Request Broker Architecture)
  32. appears to be one of the most important standards for open
  33. distributed systems today. The OMG counts more than 550 member companies
  34. worldwide, including Apple, IBM, SUN, DEC, NCR, etc.

  36. More and more CORBA-related postings are appearing on Usenet. However,
  37. due to the lack of a CORBA newsgroup, the discussion is scattered over
  38. comp.object, comp.lang.c++, comp.databases.object, comp.databases,
  39. comp.soft-sys.middleware.opendoc, comp.os.ms-windows.programmer.ole, and
  40. over a variety of mailing list.

  42. There is an increasing number of people looking for information on CORBA.
  43. However, they often have difficulties reaching CORBA experts, as many
  44. of the CORBA mailing lists are unofficial and only known to CORBA insiders.
  45. The purpose of the CORBA Usenet group is to make discussions on the topic
  46. more accessible to the entire network community.

  78. PROCEDURE:

  80. This RFD initiates a discussion period of at least 21 days.  If a
  81. consensus on the charter and the name of the group is reached, a Call
  82. for Votes (CFV) for the group will be issued.  Exact voting conditions
  83. will be outlined in the CFV and the vote will be conducted by a
  84. neutral third party.  The voting period will last from 21 to 31 days
  85. and the group will pass if the YES votes outnumber the NO votes by at
  86. least 100 votes and if at least 2/3rds of the votes are in favor of
  87. the new group.
